LO2 Task 1 - Codes and Conventions (Compare and Contrast)

One type of factual programming is the News, this being for example the BBC News. Looking at this Factual programming you are able to see that this type of factual programming will consist of a wide range of facts and statistics and will be presented in a professional manner.

The codes and conventions within this type of factual programming is that it will include a Mode of address to the viewer, as you are able to see from the example that the women is dressed professionally and typically set in front of a table and having her hands leaned forwarding. This use of posture allows power to be demonstrated to viewers therefore making the information provided more valid. This is emphasised by the tone of language provided allowing viewers to have more focus in what is being said.

Another code that is covered is the use of a field reporter, within the News this is a typical feature to include as it allows more insight into what is happening and the topic at concern. We can establish that the studio news reader provides the basis of the news whereas the field reporters allowing more focus to a selected subject. From having the studio news reader and filed reporter we are able to see the links that that are made to the studio, this set the professional manner in ending the message being provided or introducing a topic.

The main phrases used are "Over to our field reporter" and "back to the studio with (Name)." Another convention within this type of factual programming is the interviewing done; this allows better understanding of the issue being discussed. Interviews will be used with expert perspectives in addition to witness. For example a topic like the riots would be more likely to include witnesses. On the other hand a topic such as schools and education may include experts. Within the News there is a report structure established this being that it may be categorised with headlines and as an introduction may include the main subject at the beginning to gain individuals interest. The use of the report structure allows professionalism to be maintained and also allows the mode of address to be complemented well. A final convention that the News will tend to have is actuality footage this being that for example a topic like the riots being discussed the use of CCTV video is presented to show the damage this allows more realism to be within the news report provided.

Another type of factual programming is Breakfast Television - "This Morning"

The programme is scheduled time is set during the morning and these times tend to be around 6am - 12.30am.The BBC breakfast show This Morning, is a British daytime television programme broadcast on ITV. It's main presenters at the moment are Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Ruth Langsford and Emonn Holmes. In addition to that it includes various other presenters standing in as part of contribution or for any illness.

One example of a Breakfast Television is "This morning" scheduled in to be presented in the morning, this being that it starts at 10.30 am and end at around 12.30 am. One convention that the breakfast television holds in contrast to the News is that they will be placed on couches creating a more comfortable atmosphere reflecting the morning feeling many individuals gain. It may include a table however this convention is used to create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

The use of having the presentation in a more relaxed environment, this being that the individuals tend to be sitting on sofas compared to the formal conventions of News that is in a more formal manner. This allow these programmes to be able to show more characteristics for example laughter and so on, yet at the same time their posture maintains in a professional manner. This allows better interaction between the audience and the viewers as it makes it more enjoyable and entertaining to watch.

Within This Morning the atmosphere set, this including the use of mugs of coffee or tea are a great way to set the Mis-en-Scene, it allows the show to be relate-able to individuals at home, this being those may be doing a similar thing enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, this allows help support the relaxed environment that the individuals are in. In addition to this they are at times in the Kitchens looking at food and this is a great way for viewers to start their morning as they to may make the food shown on TV.Whereas the News keep a professional front, with just a desk and papers, this allows a better set of professionalism and seriousness to the information that they want to provide.

Looking at the show, I am able to see that in terms of the way the presenters are dressed are more colourful but at the same time appropriate, this allows more relaxed environment once again and allows the presenters to create a personality traits from the sue of their clothing and their behaviours, this can be a great method in creating a better connection with the audience. Whereas the News simple are dressed in formal wear, and wear dull colours such as black, grey and so on. The main use of this is to allow professionalism to be presented but also the seriousness of the News and the information being presented to viewers.

Looking at the way the presenters are speaking, looking at the show "This Morning" you are able to see that the conversations that take place are light heated and the presenters are able to include humour when presenting information. The information is factual and within the show are delivered in different methods, this being videos, commentaries and interviews. one great method that the show have used to gain the interest and connection of their audience is through the use of social networking sites, this allows them to have a say in the topics discussed. This allows the show to allow more involvement from its viewers and this then makes it more entertaining and appealing to viewers.
